Happy Mother’s Day!We would like to dedicate this newsletter to all the moms out there in their many forms. Some women are mothers to their natural or adopted children, others are non-traditional…an aunt who nurtures or a woman who takes care of those around her, whether through being a good friend, or through her loving actions. |
Featured Mom
My mom, Vicki, is one amazing woman. She is complex, expressive, funny, loving, and maternal in a mama bear way. And she is a friend. Always the one to answer the many questions flung her way by yours truly, she weathered many inquisitions. “Will I die if I stop doing this (breathing demonstrated)?!” “What does virgin mean?” “Why do I bleed over days, and not just at once?” A trooper to be sure, my mom helped me understand the intricacies life. She was always open to me, and never wrapped her responses in awkwardness or euphemisms. She helped me think through this new info, knowing that more burning questions from Sara were sure to come her way.Thank you, mom, for being there and helping to paint a picture of the world as I now know it!

Insight into PMS by Sara M.What do you think of when you hear someone say “PMS”? Is it a negative feeling/idea/image that pops into your head? I’d bet the farm that you conjure up something along those lines.Well, here’s my new, or at least recently recognized, PMS symptom:
Joy. Yup, that’s right. Good, old-fashioned euphoria. The inexplicable kind. I was walking home from work one night, when I found myself happy as could be. It was puzzling…I mean, nothing in particular had happened that I could base this feeling on. After some quick math, I realized it was a few days before my period. Could it be? Could this be a symptom, could there be a connection here?! Yes, absolutely!
We always discuss the waves of sadness or frustration that can come pouring out like tidal waves during this time, but what about the waves of euphoria or silliness? Couldn’t we begin to interpret these various intense emotions or other PMS “symptoms” as little insights into what’s going on inside? Maybe a headache implies too much stress in our lives, perhaps sensitive breasts indicate a need for a more diverse diet or maybe feelings of joy indicate the resolution of an interior conflict. Instead of looking at these things as part of a “syndrome”, I choose to see them as valuable insights.
It’s time for a positive spin on the period before your period!

Happy Bike to Work - Year!My co-worker, Sara, told me that May 16th is National Bike to Work Day. We decided that we’d let y’all know about it, so I searched “National Bike to Work Day” on the web to get some more info. I could find no exact date for this event – different organizations and cities claimed different days. It got me thinking – does the date really matter? The point is to live more lightly in order to save resources, reduce carbon emissions and get some exercise, something we should all practice every day of the year.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about my own not-so-green habits. The magazine Vanity Fair dedicated their last issue to environmental concerns. The issue focused on global warming and the factors contributing to its continuation. It was embarrassing to be reminded by a mainstream publication like Vanity Fair that I need to treat the Earth more kindly, but also remarkable that such a publication was discussing a devastatingly pressing threat facing our planet. I was excited and thought, “Great! The mainstream media is catching on. Change is going to happen!”
I now realize that my enthusiasm was a bit hasty. The vast majority of the nation is not on the “save our dying planet” bandwagon. Because the danger is so immediate, there cannot be just a few publications that talk about global warming; EVERY publication needs to talk about global warming. As Sara pointed out, it’s not a sexy story, it’s a depressing one, but let’s not allow times of despair to cause inaction. We have to keep up the momentum and make changes. We can work together to find alternate, more environmentally friendly ways of living. We can do this by assessing all aspects of how we live and by making each aspect more sustainable. You’ve already done it with menstruation and this month we’re reminded that the choice of how we get to work can also be a way to change our living habits. I’m going to shoot for biking or walking to work at least 3 days a week. How about you?!
Happy trails! ~ Diana
