Become a GladRags Activist!
We encounter a slew of obstacles in this business. There are some age-old taboos in place that need to be overhauled and done away with. Consider the menstrual slang term “the curse”, a negative phrase that perpetuates shameful ideas about being a woman. The throw-away, convenience-based, “I don’t want to think about it or see it” culture we live in is also a major hurdle. Here’s where you come in. Your action, optimism and commitment are the best ways to help make more women comfortable with their bodies and menstrual alternatives. Consider doing some or all of the following: 1. Talk to your doctor/healthcare practitioner about reusables and what they have done for you.
2. Talk to the women in your life about GladRags – friends, sisters, mothers, daughters, classmates, co-workers, your pizza delivery woman…etc.

3. Write letters to the editor in response to articles that promote environmental responsibility and fail to mention reusable menstrual options. Let them know you, as a reader, want to read about reusables and that the topic of menstruation doesn’t scare you away.

4. Learn more about the disposable pad and tampon industry.

5. Keep brochures and/or catalogs on hand for those you meet that are on the way to menstrual enlightenment. We’d be happy to provide you with literature, just let us know what you need.

6. Have a menstrual awareness party or seminar.

7. Contact magazines, let them know that you, the reader, are okay with articles on menstruation. Even better, you are even happier with POSITIVE articles on menstruation.

8. Contact environmental organizations, feminist groups, bookstores and other inspiring places with your menstrual know-how and let them know you support and encourage their efforts to spread the word on reusables.

9. Start a menstrual band. We have one in Portland called “Super Plus”. And, years ago, Portland had another band called “Flo and the Menstruals”!

Want to get to know some other GladRags users? Well, now you can in our website’s new feature: the “Monthly Friend” corner. You’ll get to read about some of the friends of the GladRags women and their personal stories of using menstrual alternatives. This month we are featuring Diana’s friend Leah:

Name: Leah P.

Hometown: Eugene, Oregon

Age: 23

Profession: Sales Clerk

Interests: Running, Yoga, hiking, horse back riding and traveling

Dreams: To be a health director for an INGO (International Non-Governmental Organization)

Number of years/months using menstrual alternatives: 3 months

Reason for switching to alternatives: The DivaCup is easy to use and I don’t need to worry about proper disposal, as one does with tampons. I plan on going to Africa with the Peace Corps and worried about how I might easily obtain tampons and/or how I would get rid of the end product. Now with the DivaCup I don’t have to worry about waste or want. I feel it gives me more freedom of movement for three reasons with or without the possibility of Africa.

1. I don’t have to worry about running out of tampons in any situation.
2. I have way more room in my purse or suitcase.
3. I have more money to buy coffee, chocolate or whatever else I need during PMS.

Favorite thing about alternatives: I don’t have to carry around tons of tampons and the DivaCup lasts for hours.
