Most of us consider cotton as a wonderful natural fabric. And it is. It’s soft, it’s breathable, it’s absorbent. But conventional cotton farm practices contribute to environmental problems. Cotton farming consumes approximately 25% of the insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides used in the world. It takes about a third of a pound of chemicals to grow the cotton for one t-shirt. Those chemicals are hazardous to farm workers and cause air and water pollution. Additionally, most of the cottonseeds planted are genetically modified seeds.

Organic cotton farmers control weeds and insects by natural methods such as crop rotation, hoeing, and beneficial insects. Rather than defoliate the cotton with chemicals, they rely on a good freeze. These are simple methods, and sometimes labor intensive, but they are effective. They are the same methods that have worked for centuries and they contribute to the clean air, water, and the biodiversity required keeping our planet healthy.
