Happy October, Friends!

The weather's starting to turn a bit chilly (well, at least around these Pacific Northwest haunts) and there's talk of knitting, cooking, apple picking and sweater wearing. Cozy up with some tea and read what's happening at GladRags, and, as always, write us if you have any thoughts to share.

Going with the flow,

The GladRags Team

GladRags is growing, my friends. Lucky for GladRags, the latest employee slinging the 'Rags is Jani Morton.

Jani comes to us from LA, via Boston, though she has been a Portlander for 3 years. Like the rest of us, Jani has had many professions, among them - Music Industry Whiz Kid, Surgical Vet Tech, Social Worker and Barista (yes, in that order). Jani really loves living in Portland - the weather, people, and living in a state where you pay no sales tax or pump your own gas.

Jani is currently the Mail Order-Distro-Wholesale-Customer Service maven at GladRags, filling Diana's shoes like nobody's business! Diana, meanwhile, misses her customer service conversations ("My Keeper's stuck!") but will be heading up the blog and this here newsletter.

More on Jani… she is in The Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers who kick major butt! She also likes to watch cheesy movies, collect vinyl lp’s, have cocktail parties with her friends, make sugar skulls for Dia De Los Muertos, get tattooed, swim in the rivers of the Northwest, go camping, and make people laugh.

Sure, women may be the only ones who bleed once a month (more or less), but what about those awesome men who don't mind when our GladRags end up in their laundry? The men who don't wince, blush or blink when menstrual alternatives are mentioned? Meet Will. A wonderful supporter of reusables, Will takes a more 'pragmatic' approach to the benefits of alternatives, assessing their financial and environmental benefits. Just another great side of reusables from another great pro-'Rags man!

Favorite thing about alternatives
Open brief analysis, I was able to see that the use of the reusable GladRag has implications beyond the scope of its users. On aggregate the use of the GladRag has the potential to reduce a significant portion of the 1609 pounds of garbage each American is responsible for every year. The average American woman uses 239.130 tampons and pads per year and 11,000 in their lifetime. Reducing any portion of the total 12 Billion pads and tampons thrown away each year relieves stress and costs on municipal waste systems and the costs of environmental degradation. These are costs we all have to bare. Furthermore, most conventional women's products are made from materials in regions where there is little or no regulation on toxic materials or agricultural stress on the natural environment. Those toxic elements are brought from those regions and are then disposed in our local ecosystems, increasing costs to our society. With that in mind, my favorite thing about alternatives is that their use helps relieve looming environmental and financial crisis.

Funny anecdotes
It is a real icebreaker with women when I tell them I am a spokesman for cutting edge feminine products.
